The word “hosting” does not describe just one service, but a variety of services that provide various functions to a domain address. Having a website and emails, for example, are two separate services though in the general case they come together, so most of the people see them as one single service. The truth is, every single domain name has a several DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that handles each particular service - the former is a numeric IP address, which identifies where the site for the domain name is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that manages the emails for the domain name. As an example, an A record is 123.123.123.123 and an MX record can be mx1.domain.com. Whenever you open a site or send an email, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a Internet domain has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. In case you have custom records on their end, the Internet browser request or the e-mail will be forwarded to the correct server. The reasoning behind employing separate records is that the two services work with different web protocols and you may have your website hosted by one provider and the e-mails by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Cloud Website Hosting

If you have a cloud website hosting account from our company and you would like to switch either your site or your e-mails to another company, it is going to take you literally only two mouse clicks to do it. Our Hepsia CP provides an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you're going to be able to see and edit the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you want to use a different email provider and they ask you to set up more MX records than the standard 2, it won't take more than a few clicks either to add them. You can also set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the higher the priority a particular MX record will have. The propagation of every record that you change or create is not going to take more than a few hours and if needed, you'll also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which reveals how long a record will remain active after it is modified or deleted.

Accessing and modifying the A or MX records for each of your domains or subdomains is very easy if you get a semi-dedicated server plan from our company. The accounts are maintained using our in-house built Hepsia Control Panel, which has a section committed to the DNS records of your domains. The latter will be listed alphabetically and you can click on each of them to see both the A and the MX records. Modifying any record is as easy as typing in the new one in a text box and saving the change, so even if you have never dealt with such matters before, you will not encounter any difficulties if you wish to move your site or emails to another provider while keeping the second service with our company. If necessary, you may also set up additional MX records and set a specific priority in accordance with the instructions of the new provider.
